Membership

The incarnation of God in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives to the church not only its mission but also its understanding of membership.  An individual becomes a member through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all of life.  Baptism and a public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are visible signs of entrance into the membership of the church.

When someone wants to join this church, he/she may enter into active membership of this church in the following ways:
By Profession of Faith: an individual makes a public profession of faith and accepts their responsibility in the life of the church.  This option may be used by someone who was baptized as an infant (when they have reached an age where they are ready to apply) or who has never been baptized (in which case they will receive baptism when they make their public profession).
By Transfer: the individual presents a certificate of transfer from another church where they had previously been a member
By Reaffirmation of Faith: the individual previously had joined a church by profession of faith (and had been baptized) but is not able to present a transfer certificate so he/she publicly reaffirms their faith and acceptance of their responsibility in the life of the church.
In each of the above ways, the session will ensure that appropriate instruction (e.g. Confirmation class or New Members class) is conducted and that the prospective member is examined.  North Presbyterian Church welcomes all persons who respond in trust and obedience to God's grace in Jesus Christ and desire to become part of the membership and ministry of his Church.  No person will be denied membership because of race, ethnic origin, worldly condition, or any other reason not related to profession of faith.  Our members seek the grace of openness in extending the fellowship of Christ to all persons, for if we don't we would be rejecting Christ himself and causing a scandal to the gospel.

Anyone is welcome to participate in the life and worship of this church.  All baptized persons, children and adults, are entitled to participate in the Lord's Supper, to pastoral care and instruction of the church.  Members of the church are involved responsibly in the ministry of the Christ's Church, including:
  • proclaiming the good news
  • taking part in the common life and worship of this church
  • praying and studying Scripture and the faith of the Christian Church
  • supporting the work of the church through the giving of money, time and talents
  • participating in the governing responsibilities of the church
  • demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the church
  • responding to God's activity in the world through service to others
  • living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, and social relationships of life
  • working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, members do not do this on their own, but with the help of God and by working together as a family.

You are welcome to simply come and be part of the life of this church.  When you are ready, we would also welcome you into our membership.
